Are You So Overwhelmed That You May Be Endangering Your Family?
I cried throughout most of Oprah’s show yesterday. The show’s purpose was to be a wake-up call for moms (and dads) who are overwhelmed and rushed. If this is you, I encourage you to visit Oprah.com and read about Brenda Slaby (pictured here).
Brenda was an assistant principal, wife, mother of two, and overwhelmed. The tragedy of living overwhelmed and being a “supermom” was manifested one dreadful day when she left her two-year-old daughter in a hot car for eight hours. My heart goes out to her and the other thirty-three families who experienced similar situations this year alone.
I remember listening to the most heart-wrenching screams played in the 911 call of a grandmother, here in Houston, who forgot her grandson in the car while she was at work. I used to wonder how someone could forget a child, especially her own. However, after hearing of so many incidents, I am more informed about how an overwhelmed and rushed life can produce such a result. In fact, one of my best friends was watching her niece one day and did the same thing. She suddenly remembered the sleeping child after about an hour on a semi-hot day. We are eternally grateful that there was no tragic end…but there could have been.
It was mentioned several times during the show that it could happen to anyone. The message is to SLOW DOWN! Relax. Take time for yourself. You must do so for the safety of the family you are working so hard for.

I am pretty absent minded when I’m busy and can see how this could happen. This is another reminder to slow down, because nothing is worth rushing off to that would jeopardize my health or the health of my family.
I cried throughout the show too. I’d like to think that this could never happen to me, but I could see how it could. Its just such a tragic accident and my heart so goes out to this woman.
