How Are Your Family Dynamics This Election Season?

Published by attygnorris at 6:34 pm under Family Politics Edit This

I mentioned yesterday that discussing politics could sometimes turn family events into war zones.  I know this all too well.  We have strong republicans and democrats within our family tree that usually love to turn family events into WWIII.

But, not this year!  For the first time in many moons, we actually agree on the same politician.  Even when we do not agree on every single nuance of the issues, we agree that our politician of choice has the right temperament, background, consistency, and ideas for change to lead our country out of the mess it has found itself in.

It has been very enjoyable to laugh, in unison, at the debates.  It has been historical to watch CNN and MSNBC for updates and not just to find something new to argue about.  During the most exciting election of our lifetimes, it is very refreshing for everyone in my family to be on the same accord when we say, “Barack Obama for president!”

Are you and your family on the same page this year?

Not at all. In the primaries, I really didn’t care if Obama or Hillary got it. I felt they were so similar on most issues, it would be ok. My mom is a huge Hillary person and my step-dad is a Republican. He was going to vote democrat if Hillary got it.

When Obama got the nomination, my sister and I were both happy about it. My mom was angry (she is one of those Hillary supporters McCain tried to lure with Palin). My mom doesn’t care for either, but she watched the last debate with me and I think she has finally realized just how much sense he makes. She hates Palin and thinks McCain is a joke at this point.

My step-dad would have been for McCain, but his tactics and choices (including Palin) have made him question him. I have been slamming Palin so much, and McCain for choosing her, that I think I made him choose not to vote for McCain. I have been talking up Obama and I think it has made him consider voting for him.

My brother-in-law is a staunch Republican and even with all the BS that Bush has pulled, he still supports him. Yikes.

It’s definitely an interesting year. Very exciting. Being from Illinois, it’s been huge for over a year with both Obama and Hillary campaigning (Hillary is from Park Ridge, IL).

Well no disagreements with my family. We’re all voting for Obama.
