Are Your Children Developing Healthy Eating Habits?

Published by attygnorris at 10:49 pm under Parenting Edit This

dashas-snack.jpg  Today on CBS’s new show, “The Doctors “, my favorite doctors were discussing causes of childhood obesity, proper nutrition, and how to help children develop healthy eating habits.  Click on the link above to read the show’s synopsis and for a few tips.

So, the show got me thinking about whether we were doing all we could to give our daughter the healthiest nutritional start in order for her to have a healthy lifestyle later.  We fed her bottled breast milk for 8 months (exclusively breast milk for the first 5 months).  After 5 months, we added baby cereal and oatmeal to her breast milk.  After 6 months, we added pureed steamed vegetables and fresh fruit to her diet.

It gets a little blurry thereafter, but I think after 7 months we added small amounts of diluted fruit juice and filtered water.  After 8 months we added chicken, fish, and formula.  At some point she began eating a modified version of everything we ate because:  1.  She didn’t get a tooth until she was 11.5 months and she STILL only has the one tooth, 2.  She eats food without the seasonings we have grown accustomed to.  After our similac ran out at 11.5 months, she began drinking whole milk.

I think we’ve done good well.  And, I’ll tell you what else–being so health-conscious about what she eats, has helped us pay closer attention to what we eat.  Fruits and vegetables play a much bigger part in our daily diet.   We do our best to drink lots of water, refrain from fried foods and caffeine, eat wheat bread instead of white…etc.  I think the whole family is having better nutritional intake and eating habits.

…Now if I can just figure out how to schedule a CONSISTENT FITNESS PLAN, I’d be alright!

The featured picture is our daughter feasting herself on some baked sweet potatoes, chopped into small blocks for her tiny mouth and a sippy cup full of vitamin D whole milk.  Yum-Yum.
