Why Are Children So Destructive?

reading-pic-6.jpgreading-pic-3.jpgreading-pic-4.jpg  I still can’t believe she did it.  She loves for me to read books to her.  She brings each one to me throughout the day to read aloud…no matter what I’m doing.  She has NEVER torn one up…until now.  I’m still in shock.  I guess I just figured since she hadn’t torn one up before, maybe she had an intuitive sense of how valuable the books and reading them were.  I was wrong.

Perhaps the lesson here is that her unspoken reverence for books is unspoken for a reason…it doesn’t exist…it was just a figment of my imagination.  Maybe her books are just another toy to be devoured when mommy isn’t watching.  Maybe story time is just another filler in a day full of random occurrences.  Or maybe she just doesn’t like Disney’s Adventures Under The Sea.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.  I know.  That book is for 4-6 year olds and my daughter’s only 13 months.  Yes, I know that’s why they make the heavy-duty cardboard books.  They are destruction-proof for small children.  But, it’s not like she can read ANY of them.  So, why not have a wider range of books as long as they have pretty pictures to keep her wowed?  Well…because mommy will get her feelings hurt when baby girl destroys them.  (sigh)  Oh, well.

    hi,

our daughters are the same age and they both love books.I mostly have hard bound books the cardboard ones but my daughter still manages to rip it off the page and its all worn and tattered. Maybe they want to see whats inside or maybe the temptation of ripping paper was to much, hehehehhe…is your daugther walking? does she have teeth now?sorry jsut curious coz are girls are the same age…

    Thanks for comments, ladies!!!

Melody, she started taking steps a week before her birthday. Now, she walks like Herman Munster (sp?) from the “Munsters”. She’s still landing on her booty a lot, but she is walking every chance she gets.

She only has 1.5 teeth. Can you believe that! LOL You wouldn’t be able to tell it though with the way she gums everything.

    What about your baby girl?

Well small children, even the most tamed ones, will eventually get overly excited with a book in their hands and will probably tear them up a bit. I guess any soft page books require just a bit more supervision.
