What Have You Learned From Your Baby?

Published by attygnorris at 10:51 pm under Parenting Edit This

After yesterday’s “Guilty Mom” post, I’d say today is a good time for #4 of my interview questions from Stephanie at Rocket Scientist.

Interview For Davida, Question #4:

You’ve had a child now for more than a year. What would you say the top five lessons you’ve learned from your baby have been (so far)?

1.  Never pull your baby by the hand.  Lift her up by her underarms instead.  Otherwise, you’ll find yourself with a screaming baby as you go to the ER for Nursemaid’s Elbow.

2.  Smile as often as you can.  Even when you can’t talk, smiling speaks for you.  Everyone loves to see your dimples, the twinkle in your eyes, and those pearly whites.  It truly will pick up someone’s day.

3.   Forgive and move on.  Even when someone does something that’s potentially harmful to you, it’s better to understand they probably didn’t mean any harm.  Instead of wasting your emotions on negativity, refer to #2 and smile.

4.   Everyone is someone’s child.  Treat them the way you’d want a stranger to treat your child.

5.   Children grow fast, which means times a-ticking by fast.  As babies, they develop physically and mentally faster than they ever will again.  Take lots of pictures to immortalize your memories.  Enjoy and cherish each moment.

What have you learned from your baby?  If you don’t have children, what have you learned from someone else’s baby?

You can read the first and second parts of the interview by clicking on the links.

BTW, if you happen to have questions you’d like to ask me, I’d LOVE to answer them.  There is no topic off limits.

    Good lessons.

If I had one lesson to remember from my little ones (who are, in general, still little) it is spend all the time you can with them. Not only (in my opinion) is it impossible to spoil children with too much attention but it’s the time you spend with your children that they will remember best - and so will you. There are a lot more grownups in therapy today saying “My parents never had time for me” than grownups saying, “My parents wouldn’t buy me a car.” I think you were spot on with 5.

Great points. I’ve also learned that kids are sponges of what they see from their parents. So I have to be sure I give my daughter positive things to soak in and minimize some of my less favorable habits.

They do grow fast, it almost makes me sad to look back, but all those memories are a blessing you’ll continually revisit as they get older.

I quickly better-understood that we are all precious.

Signe, I haven’t noticed this yet, but it makes sense. I’ll have to keep it in mind.

Stephanie, I have to agree with you on the spoiling thing. Remember that post from a few months ago? I intend to shower her with as much love and affection as I can.

Fitness Diva, I have to work on ALL of these daily. :)

Danny, you’re right. We’ve seen how much Dasha mimics from our behavior already. It’s important to set a good example.

Heidi, yep–gotta treasure every second. People told me this before she was born and now I see it first hand.

Anne, thanks for reading and taking the time to comment.

MrsBear, I’ve begun to see that already. I have family photos as our screensaver so I get a chance to see the past 16 months flash on the screen continuously. Sometimes I look at those pictures in awe. She’s changed SO MUCH already. I’m thankful I have the pictures.

    Frugalangel, yes, indeed. We are.

Thanks for the comments ladies and gent!!!

    Davida
